DropTunes accesses and plays your audio files on Dropbox: a popular tool that syncs files between your computers and also makes them available on the web. DropTunes was designed and developed by me, John Mills, with the help of some cool open source projects (see below)
How DropTunes works
DropTunes creates a /Public/DropTunes folder in your account to store configuration files. This folder is regularly modified as new songs are requested to be played.
Requirements
A modern web browser like Chrome, Safari, Opera, Firefox or IE8+ (iOS and Android apps are on the horizon)
A Dropbox account with some audio files in it (or shared to you)
Enough free space in your account to match the size of any song you want to play (example: A 248mb episode of 'A State of Trance' will require 248mb of a free space to play.)
Pro Tips
For best performance, disable syncing of the /Public/DropTunes folder from all your machines.
The more audio files you have in a folder, the longer the load times. Organize them efficiently for max speed.
Use selective sync to sync just one computer's music library to Dropbox to save on local storage
Use a web browser that matches the audio file formats you have most of (Check out the table below for more info). Recommended browser is Google Chrome because it can play all popular formats in HTML5 mode.
Cool Tricks
If you use iTunes, store your music library in your Dropbox folder to access it from DropTunes
Share a folder of audio files on Dropbox with a friend, and they'll have immediate access to them in DropTunes
